Everything But Marriage?

It seems that Washington, as in the state, is getting around to legalizing gay marriage. They have not done it yet, but they’re getting closer by having passed a bill that gives same-sex domestic partners all of the rights of a married couple. Go read about it here. Then take a look at the date on that piece. April 15, 2009. How come I am only hearing about this now?

One good reason is that I am lazy about seeking out news. Another reason is a quote from State Senator Ed Murray, who said: “the most remarkable thing about this bill is that it is unremarkable.” As it should be. Same-sex marriage should be about as newsworthy as passing a law that says you can’t throw live chickens at children after sunset. It’s just common sense. Let gays marry.

But another reason I have not heard about it until now is that I haven’t heard about the uproar until now (and this blog is called Antipundit, so you knew I was going to get to the gay-bashing idiots, didn’t you?). There’s the so-called Faith and Freedom Network, who are passing around a petition to get this new law up on the November ballots so that folks can vote to repeal it. That petition was started by the Washington Values Alliance, and if I may go off on a tangent for a second—are these not the most ironic names you’ve ever heard of? I think there should be a law that says you can’t have the word “Freedom” in your name if you’re for taking away freedoms. And “Washington Values?” I live in Washington—those are not my values. I call BS by misrepresentation.

My point, though, is that I didn’t know, for example, that our Governor was going to sign this bill into law today, and I would not have know if it weren’t for a news piece on the TV at the gym about this inaptly named Washington Values Alliance and their hate-mongering petition. And so now, I am going to tell all my friends about it. And they will tell their friends, and maybe, just maybe, this stupid petition will die on the streets, ridiculed for the homophobic vehicle that it is.

I guess I should thank they blowhards for making a stink. Or, to mix my metaphor, if the squeaky wheel gets the grease, than thanks, fools, for reminding me where the oil goes. I’ve got some e-mails to send.
